Svaneti is one of Georgia’s most impressive and distinctive regions. Here, the scale of the Caucasus feels especially powerful: ancient towers rise against a backdrop of glaciers, mountain rivers run through deep gorges, and peaks extend above the clouds.
Five of the Caucasus Mountains’ eight peaks above 5,000 metres are located in Svaneti. Among them are Shkhara, the highest mountain in Georgia at more than 5,000 metres, and the famous Ushba, one of the most recognisable and technically challenging peaks in the Caucasus.
The first day begins with a journey from Batumi to Enguri Reservoir and Dam. The road to Mestia is long, but it is much more than an ordinary transfer: mountain rivers, deep gorges, forested slopes, and panoramic views of the Caucasus accompany you for almost the entire route.
Along the way, you will see Mount Ushba and stop at scenic panoramic viewpoints. The route then leads to Mestia, the cultural and tourism centre of Upper Svaneti, where medieval family towers still rise among the modern streets.
In Mestia, you will visit the Mikheil Khergiani House Museum. Khergiani was a legendary Svan mountaineer known as the “Tiger of the Rocks” for his exceptional climbing skill. The exhibition tells the story of his life, expeditions, and the mountaineering traditions closely connected with Svaneti and the Caucasus Mountains.
After exploring Mestia, you will check in at a guesthouse. Guests stay in private rooms without sharing, and each room has its own bathroom facilities. Lunch and a light dinner on the first day are included in the tour price.
The second day begins with breakfast and a journey to Ushguli, a high-mountain community at the foot of Shkhara, known for its ancient Svan towers and unique cultural landscape. You will walk through the village and see how traditional architecture has survived among immense mountains and glaciers.
Those who wish may join a walk toward the Shkhara Glacier. The route is easy and does not require special preparation or hiking equipment. In August, the area offers a remarkable natural contrast: bright greenery, flowering alpine meadows, and snow-covered glacial peaks, as though spring and winter had met in one place.
After Ushguli, the journey does not retrace the road taken on the first day. The return route passes through Lower Svaneti, Lentekhi, and Tsageri, turning the tour into a complete circular journey.
Lower Svaneti receives far fewer tourists and feels noticeably different from the popular areas around Mestia. Here, you will see almost untouched natural landscapes, narrow gorges, dense forests, small mountain settlements, and views of the glaciers of the Ailama massif.
Thanks to the circular route, both days offer completely different impressions: the famous sights of Upper Svaneti give way to rarely visited roads and the wild nature of Lower Svaneti. New landscapes continue to unfold almost until the moment you return home.
The tour is organised so that this major mountain journey remains comfortable: transportation in a comfortable vehicle, professional guide service, private accommodation without room sharing, and all meals specified in the program are already included in the price.
